What Is Wildwood School?

Wildwood School is an independent school with a public mission. The school is committed to making connections with schools and programs in the public sector. Throughout the school, students participate in a program of involvement with their local community. They volunteer at local schools and at organizations such as Opica, St. Joseph's Center, and Westside Children's Center. Additionally, students and families raise funds for St. Joseph's Center, One Voice, UNICEF, and a variety of other nonprofit companies. Wildwood School's community involvement program received a 2005 Leading Edge Award from the National Association of Independent School. The Wildwood Outreach Center forwards Wildwood School's public mission of supporting the creation, development, and enhancement of small, personalized, learner-centered schools in Southern California. The Center was founded in January 2001 with a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The State Farm Companies Foundation and the Bannerman Foundation also support the Center. Through its outreach work, Wildwood School has the distinction of being one of only 20 schools across the country to be cited as a Coalition of Essential Schools (CES) mentor school. Wildwood mentors four schools: CityLife Downtown Charter School in downtown Los Angeles, ARISE Charter High School in Oakland, CA (opening fall 2007), Opportunities Unlimited Charter High School in south Los Angeles, and Civitas School of Leadership, a new pilot school opening fall 2007 in Los Angeles Unified School District #4. The Center's mission focuses on the following key principles:Schools should be small and personalized, recognizing the need of every learner to be supported and valued. The work in schools should actively engage learners through hands-on projects and learning. Student achievement is best demonstrated by what students can do as observed through portfolio assessment and exhibitions. Drawing from our experience at Wildwood School, the Center provides programming and support services to public, charter, and independent K-12 schools and educators, local communities, and parents, including:Site visits to Wildwood School to observe small, personalized education in action. Professional development workshops to assist educators, communities, and parents in providing high quality, personalized learning environments for students. Technical assistance to those who are interested in establishing small, personalized schools. We provide assistance in designing, locating, funding, and preparing administrative and teaching staff for such schools. Administrator and faculty professional development includes workshops, onsite mentoring, shadowing, and custom-designed professional development. Publications, including The Advisory Toolkit, a 45-minute DVD and accompanying 400-page workbook that detail how to plan and implement an effective advisory program in middle and high schools. The Center operates with funding from grants, fees for services, and the assistance of individuals who support our mission. For further information, please contact Adrianne Jackson, Wildwood Outreach Center Associate at (310) 806-4526 or Jeanne Fauci, Outreach Center Director, at (310) 806-4502.
