What Is Primary Engineer's?

In 2005 the question asked, and still asked, is just how do we get more engineers? At the time we felt we had the solution and established Primary Engineer to deliver high quality, practical engineering skills to primary teachers and through them to whole classes of pupils. It seemed clear that to reach the maximum number of children effectively was to use the elements already at play in schools – teachers and the curriculum. Over the years we have developed the model as our experience highlighted that more strands were needed to extend the learning, the engagement, the enjoyment and the career paths to becoming an engineer. Jumping to 2014, we now have added additional training courses, sequential in nature, to develop and deliver even more practical maths and science. Courses are available for early years (reception and pre-reception), primary and secondary teachers. From 2015 in Scotland these can be extended into masters level courses (2016 in England). Following on from the Wood Report (Scotland) and Perkins Report (England) the integration of industry and engineers has never been so integral to our programmes. The support of the IMechE has helped to facilitate engineers to support schools – from the straight forward interviews of engineers by pupils to attending the training days and supporting the classroom teachers. Our recent development was to address – so what do pupils and schools do with all these STEM experiences? July 2014 we launched the Institution of Primary Engineers and the Institution of Secondary Engineers – effectively professional engineering institutions for primary and secondary pupils with the aim of guiding, mentoring and identifying all the skills the pupils develop. 2015 looks set to be a busy year with growing interest in the programme from schools, industry and government, feel free to contact us for more information.
