Optalert is an innovative medtech company, that has pioneered the use of Blepharometry (the measurement of blinks) in the quantification of drowsiness. Through cutting edge research, Optalert discovered the biomarker for drowsiness (fatigue), the connection between brain function and eyelid movement. A blink is the highly coordinated interaction of two muscle groups, the orbicularis oculi (OO) and the levator palpebrae superioris (LPS). Each muscle is controlled from different centres in the brain which need to operate in synchronicity. When drowsiness occurs, the synchronisation and coordination between the two brain centres deteriorates and this is evident in the blink characteristics. Optalert applied advanced machine learning algorithms to blinks collected from alert subjects and drowsy subjects. Using these Artificial Intelligent (AI) techniques Optalert was able to develop an algorithm that could quantify the level of deterioration in cognitive brain function due to drowsiness. This led to the only scientifically proven, objective measurement of drowsiness, the Johns Drowsiness Scale (JDS). The JDS is used worldwide in both research for accurately quantifying drowsiness levels and in industry, protecting thousands of lives and valuable company assets and OEM into the #Automotive Industry. Optalert is now turning its extensive expertise in Blepharometry and Artificial Intelligence to identify the biomarkers for other degradations to neurological brain function such as onset of seizures due to Epilepsy, ADHD, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, alertness and motor neuron disease.
