What Is Waikato Regional Council?

Waikato Regional Council works with others to build a Waikato that has a healthy environment, a strong economy and vibrant communities. We have a strategic direction to guide work over the current council’s term and will focus attention on five priority areas, while continuing to deliver on our other work. This includes managing and regulating the use of all natural resources, controlling plant and animal pests, enhancing biodiversity, minimising flooding and erosion, coordinating civil defence emergency management, improving safety on waterways, coordinating public transport and road safety, preventing pollution and managing contaminated sites. Each of our five strategic priorities places great emphasis on working with others: - Co-management of natural resources with iwi - Sustainable management of our region’s land and water resources upon which the Waikato economy is based - Sustaining the economic and social values of our coastal marine area — 10,000 square kilometres stretching 22km offshore - Partnering with key stakeholders and communities to achieve the environmental, economic and social results we all want for the region - Regional development - working with others to help the region realise the potential of its prime location and the quality of its business, people, and natural and physical assets. Healthy Environment, Strong Economy, Vibrant Communities, Our Waikato
