What Is Department for Correctional Services?

The Department for Correctional Services (DCS) is central to South Australia’s criminal justice system. DCS employs more than 2000 staff across both regional and metropolitan areas and is responsible for nine prisons and seventeen Community Correctional facilities. Our department exists to contribute to public safety, the reduction of crime and the protection of victims through the safe, secure and humane management of offenders under our supervision and the provision of opportunities for rehabilitation. Reducing Reoffending: 10% by 2020 aims to achieve a 10% reduction in the number of people who return to correctional services by 2020. Currently in South Australia, 46% of those released from prison will return to corrective services within two years. This strategy aims to stem the growth of our prison system.
