What Is UC Irvine Public Health?

Since 2003, UCI Public Health has worked hard to build a vibrant and collaborative interdisciplinary program focusing on public health research, education, and service with the end goal of enhancing health and well-being, locally, and globally. The only one of its kind in Orange County and only one of three in the University of California system, UCI Public Health has the expressed mission to create, integrate and translate population-based knowledge into preventive strategies for reducing the societal burden of human disease and disability. As part of the Susan and Henry Samueli College of Health Sciences at UC Irvine, UCI Public Health is currently working toward the goal of becoming a School of Public Health. Four departments make up the program including, Environmental and Occupational Health, Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Health, Society, and Behavior, and Population Health and Disease Prevention. The program offers two types of bachelor’s degree, a master’s degree, a doctoral degree, and several joint degree options. As of Fall 2020, more than 1,200 undergraduate and over 130 doctoral and master’s degree students have graduated with degrees in Public Health. The program is led by Dr. Bernadette Boden-Albala, the Director and Founding Dean, where she is also a Professor in the Department of Health, Society and Behavior, and a Professor in the Department of Neurology, School of Medicine.
