What Is Standing Together Against Rape?

The mission of Standing Together Against Rape (STAR) is to provide the best quality of crisis intervention, education, and advocacy services to victims of sexual assault and abuse, their families, and our community. STAR has had a presence in Anchorage for over 35 years. STAR has two distinct aspects to our services. The foundation of the organization is its Direct Service Advocacy work. This includes operating a 24 hour crisis line that is operated by STAR staff during the business day and extensively trained volunteers on evenings, weekends, and holidays. STAR advocates are also responsible for responding around the clock to reports of sexual assault and child sexual abuse. Finally, advocates provide on-going support to victims of sexual assault and abuse. This includes safety planning, court accompaniment, and referrals for necessary resources. In FY 2014, STAR received 1,800 calls on the crisis line, assisted with 236 Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) call outs for reports of rape and sexual assault, responded to 285 reports of child sexual abuse at Alaska CARES serving over 740 children. Additionally, STAR has an education and prevention team that presents age appropriate personal safety information in the Anchorage School District. Additionally, educators also present to the community at large about bystander intervention, identifying warning signs of child sexual abuse, mandated reporting, and a myriad of other topics related to the spectrum of power based violence. Last fiscal year, STAR Educators reached 14,896 students from pre-kindergarten through college with personal safety information. Additionally, educators facilitated 98 presentations for community organizations, businesses and professionals reaching 3,030 people.
