What Is Royal Australian Air Force?
The Royal Australian Air Force is a world-class military force operating some of the most advanced aircraft and defence technology in use anywhere today. The Air Force’s core purpose is the defence of Australia but the service is also called upon to fulfil many other important roles both here and overseas. Depending on each role, Air Force personnel can be posted to any one of 15 operational air bases across Australia, to offices in Canberra and overseas, or to anywhere Air Force resources are needed. The technology available to the Air Force’s 18,000 serving officers, airmen and airwomen provides a tactical edge, but people are the most important asset. They work with world-leading technology, from highly-advanced aircraft and armaments to the complex communication systems that keep the Air Force informed and in touch. Air Force men and women come from a diverse range of social, cultural and ethnic backgrounds. From pilot to medical, air traffic controller to engineer, people enjoy the challenge and rewards of an Air Force career. The Royal Australian Air Force can trace its roots back to the establishment of the Australian Flying Corps in 1912, just nine years after man's first powered aircraft flight.
