What Is Notre Dame Academy-os AngelesCA?

Notre Dame Academy is a Catholic, college-preparatory school sponsored by the Congregation of the Sisters of Notre Dame, a religious community founded in 1850 in Coesfeld, Germany. The Christian education of youth has always been the Congregation's principal apostolic goal. The integration of the instruction in Christian truths and values with human knowledge in all aspects of the school program has as its purpose the formation of mature, Christian women. Therefore, both the religious and lay faculty at NDA endeavor to educate each student in such a way that she may reach her fullest spiritual and intellectual capacity within an atmosphere of loving concern and religious commitment. Education in all its form as well as preferential option for those who are poor and marginalized have been integral to our understanding of our vocation and mission as Sisters of Notre Dame from our founding in Coesfeld, Germany in 1850 to the present. We continue to carry on the mission of Christ as a worldwide congregation serving in 18 countries on five continents. Our General Chapter 2004 called us once again to revitalize our rich educational heritage and to maximize the effectiveness and transformative potential of all our educational efforts as we contribute to the creation of the One World of God's dreams. In order to concretize this world vision, we held an International Education Conference in Brazil. Before during and after the conference, our Notre Dame educators were called to study, reflect and share our education principles, sometimes called the four cornerstones that are foundational to our education from our beginnings as Sisters of Notre Dame. Throughout our history, there was not always one universal way of expressing these principles, but always our four foundational beliefs energized and united us in our apostolic ministries--a splendid base from which to continue the mission of Jesus. We want to articulate clearly our spiritual vision and principles to respond to the ever new call of God hidden in our cherished educational heritage. We are challenged today more than ever to have a healthy balance of spiritual focus together with professional effectiveness and efficiency in our Notre Dame educational endeavors across the world. With credible fidelity and in response to the needs of the present times, we have formulated an educational document to articulate our new vision and principles for the 21st century. This new paradigm of education aims to ignite the indomitable spark of the Divine Spirit within each person, to enable her/him to live and minister in peace and to be a promoter of a just and balanced world order. We are most grateful to each sister in our congregation as an educator and to all our collaborators who share our Notre Dame spirit and mission. It is our sincere hope that through serious and on-going study, reflection and concrete application of our Notre Dame educational vision and principles, all our education efforts will become truly transformative. As educators, we pray that our commitment to the holistic development of people, especially those on the margins of society, will contribute to a new creation and a future full of hope. May Mary, patroness of Notre Dame, tender, compassionate teacher of Jesus, our Master Teacher, bless us and accompany us as we open up our mission of education to the ever new call of the Spirit who makes all things new. May we move forward together in the direction where the dynamism of the Spirit is leading us!
