What Is New Center Community Mental Health Services?

For over 25 years New Center CMHS has been dedicated to providing and promoting quality behavioral health services to North Central Detroit and Highland Park. Located in Detroit, Michigan, New Center Community Mental Health Services was incorporated in 1979 as a nonprofit, mental health center. With a staff of 13, New Center CMHS began providing quality treatment to 500 residents of Detroit, many of whom had been recently released from psychiatric hospitals and needed outpatient treatment for the medications they were taking. Over time, as the number of individuals needing services increased, New Center CMHS has grown in the number of facilities operated, clients served, programs offered, and workers employed. In 1986, New Center purchased the Fisher YMCA, an eight-story building designed by Albert Kahn and built in 1929. In 1991, after the addition of the North Park and Highland Park service areas, two new sites were added. In October 1992, New Center purchased the abandoned Utley Library and updated the building to create The Family Place, which houses multiple organizations that provide coordinated services to children age 8 and up, and their families. All of these facilities have been renovated, are fully operational, and now house New Center CMHS staff who provide a wide range of comprehensive mental health services to over 4,000 children, adolescents, adults, and elderly consumers annually.
