What Is Midwest Petroleum Company?
Midwest Petroleum Corporation was founded in 1946 by Mr. & Mrs. Louis Levin. Since 1946 Midwest Petroleum has functioned without interruption, first as a wholesale distributor of gasoline and fuel products, and now as a convenience store operator. Midwest currently operates over 50 stores located in Missouri and Illinois area, and services multiple dealer locations. The corporate headquarters is located in Saint Louis City at 6760 Southwest Ave. Over the years Midwest Petroleum has acquired several smaller companies including the real property owned by these firms. During the 1970's, with deteriorating fuel prices and independent dealer's market shares falling to larger branded oil companies, Midwest started to make the transition from wholesale distributor to convenience store operator. One of the companies which had been acquired during this period was Bolch Oil. By using the existing Midwest locations and the new Bolch Oil properties, Midwest began to rapidly expand operations. As a result of the rapid expansion and devastating market conditions of the late 70's early 80's, Midwest faced serious financial problems. As a result Midwest was forced to seek protection under Chapter 11. After a short reorganization period Midwest Petroleum turned into a success story, and the company has never looked back. Midwest was able to offer vendors 100% payback on the dollar, and were able to make dramatic improvements in operational efficiencies. Every year since 1993 Midwest Petroleum has shown strong and consistent profits. Starting in 2002 Midwest has been featured as one of Saint Louis's Top 150 Privately held companies according to the Saint Louis Business Journal. The ongoing philosophy at Midwest has been one of slow and steady growth. Midwest has looked to remodel or acquire 2 to 5 stores a year. This business model has held true and lead to the company's success for the last 12 years. Midwest Petroleum sells ConocoPhillips branded gasoline at its various convenience store locations. Midwest employees nearly 500 employees and is continuously looking for ways to improve operations and the environment Midwest operates in. This message has been reinforced by the Mission Statement: "Be the Leader by developing and retaining quality employees, providing the very best service." In 2004 Midwest embarked on a new corporate wide philosophy which is highlighted in the above mission. A renewed commitment focused on respect, leadership, integrity, communication, organization, and development of employees along with improved standards company wide are reflected in the day to day activities. By using these principles as a basis Midwest will be able to grow and improve in an ever changing environment. Midwest Petroleum is an active participant in the Missouri Petroleum Marketers and Convenience Store Association (MPCA), Illinois Petroleum Marketer Association (IPMA), the Petroleum Marketer Association of America (PMAA), and the National Association of Convenience Stores (NACS). The company is owned equally by Bernard S. Levin and Donald W. McNutt.
