What Is Magnolia Public Schools?

In the fall of 2002, the Magnolia Public Schools (â??MPSâ?? or â??Magnoliaâ??) established its first tuition free public charter school, Magnolia Science Academy-1 Reseda in the San Fernando Valley. Since then, MPS has established ten other charter school sites in California that provide an innovative and high quality education. \n\nMPS provides a high-performing Science Technology Engineering Math (STEM)-focused public school option to historically underserved families. Its schools outperform their neighborhood public schools, achieve prestigious honors in competitions and send students to the top colleges in the nation.\n\nThere are 4 MPS middle schools (grades 6-8), 1 elementary school (grades K-5), and 5 middle/high schools (grades 6-12).\n\nDistinctive Features of MPS\n\n1) Home Visits Program :\nResearch has shown that one of the keys to successful teaching and schooling is creating personal connections with students. MPS teachers visit students at their homes to enhance student learning and involvement. Teachers can identify students' latest interests or concerns, such as a new hobby, an upcoming trip, or a change in the family. Parents and teachers are critical partners in educating the â??whole childâ??. \n\n2) Extended Learning Time:\nâ?¢ Saturday school\nâ?¢ After-school tutoring and clubs until 6:00 p.m.\nâ?¢Â Targeted intervention before, during, and after-school\nâ?¢Â Summer school programs\nâ?¢Â Winter and Spring Academic Camps\n\n3) Parent and Community Engagement Program:\nâ?¢ Monthly parent workshops and task-force meetings\nâ?¢ Community partnerships with local organizations\nâ?¢Â Community precinct walks \nâ?¢Â Parent advisory council and volunteer program \nâ?¢ Web based parent support system (CoolSIS)
