What Is Jefferson School District?

Established in 1918 the Jefferson Elementary School District, located just south of San Francisco, serves kindergarten through 8th grade students in the north San Mateo County cities of Daly City, Colma, Broadmoor Village, and a section of Pacifica. With an estimated population of approximately 100,000, Daly City is the largest political unit in San Mateo County. The population of the four communities has a wide socio-economic, ethnic, and cultural diversity. Overlooking the scenic entrance to San Francisco Bay and out to the Pacific Ocean, Daly City has long been called "The Gateway to the Peninsula". At present, the District includes eleven elementary schools, three intermediate schools, a state preschool, maintenance/warehouse unit, Central Kitchen (housed in the former Christopher Columbus school) and District Office. These units are scattered throughout Daly City, Colma and Broadmoor, making it the largest complex in the community. The District serves more than 6,000 students. More than 20 languages are represented, making the District truly international. The District presently employs more than 350 teachers and 300 regular classified employees. The Administration is comprised of experienced and professional people, and the Governing Board is supportive of the educational process. The instructional program of the District requires high expectations of the students. The District maintains current materials and assesses student progress through multiple measures on an annual basis. Current results indicate that District students are performing at or above the State average in most areas. The District believes in parent involvement. Every school maintains an active PTA and a School Site Council. The District also supports several district level parent groups, including a Parent Involvement Advisory Committee. Those interested in learning more about the Jefferson Elementary School District are encouraged to call their local school or the Superintendent of Schools at (650) 746-2400. To learn more about the history of Daly City, visit the Daly City History Guild web. The Jefferson Elementary School District Board of Education has five members who are elected by the public to four-year terms. Elections are held in odd-numbered years, and terms are staggered so that two or three seats are open each election.
