What Is Helios School?

Located in the heart of Silicon Valley, on a spacious 4-acre campus in Sunnyvale, Helios School is a 501(c)(3) non-profit in Sunnyvale, CA. Founded in 2007 by Anne Beneventi, an esteemed expert in gifted education and the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from SENG. Today with over over 160 students in grades kindergarten through eighth grade, Helios continues to execute on its mission: to provide engaging and imaginative education that meets the unique intellectual, social and emotional needs of gifted students and families. WHY HELIOS? Giftedness isn’t simply talent or high achievement; giftedness isn’t a function of how children perform, but rather who they are. Their cognitive and emotional makeup is truly different from the norm, and they have a heightened sense of awareness coupled with a strong intellectual drive to learn. All children have the right to be challenged, engaged, and learn something new every day. Gifted learners have advanced cognitive abilities, but not necessarily in every area. Finally, gifted children can be found in every part of society. Because their inner lives and educational needs are so markedly different, they thrive in an environment that understands and meets their needs; where one size is not expected to fit all. The unique characteristics of gifted learners can make it difficult for them to thrive in a traditional classroom where classes are too easy or rote. In response, some gifted kids rebel, while others deny who they are in order to fit in. Helios provides: True Peers - Among peers, gifted children can feel free to be themselves. Differentiated Learning - Ensuring gifted students are challenged and supported. Authentic Learning - More depth and complexity in the curriculum. Social / Emotional Learning - Helping gifted learners to connect with others.
