Consumer Portfolio Services, Inc. ("CPS") is a specialty finance company that provides indirect automobile financing to individual borrowers with past credit problems, low incomes, or limited credit histories. The Company purchases retail installment sales contracts from factory franchised automobile dealers. The contracts are secured by late model used cars and to a lesser extent, new cars. The Company accumulates the contracts into pools, and sells the pooled contracts to investors in the form of "AAA" rated asset-backed securities while retaining a substantial economic interest in the performance of the pools and continuing to service the contracts.The Company’s economic success depends on its ability to purchase contracts at interest rates that provide an acceptable return on equity after consideration for cost of funds, credit losses, and servicing costs. CPS was founded in 1991 and currently purchases contracts in 38 states from approximately 3,800 dealers. The Company’s common stock is traded on the NASDAQ National Market System under the symbol "CPSS".
