Cawthron Institute is New Zealand’s largest independent science organisation. Our science is helping protect the environment and underpin development in primary industries. We work with regional councils, Government departments, major industries, private companies and individual clients, adding value to their projects and initiatives through smart science. Our scientists have unique expertise in aquaculture research, coastal and freshwater resource management, food safety and quality, algal technologies, biosecurity and analytical testing. Their ground-breaking science is supported by substantial testing and research laboratories, state-of-the-art technology and a purpose-built aquaculture park. We are a diverse, innovative and pragmatic organisation employing over 200 scientists, laboratory technicians, researchers and specialist staff from more than 25 different countries. Since our establishment almost 100 years ago, we have strived to support New Zealand through applied science that benefits our economy and environment.
