The Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research is Australia's oldest medical research institute, and celebrated its centenary in 2015. Our researchers are working to understand, prevent and treat diseases including cancer — particularly blood, breast, lung, ovarian and bowel cancers — type 1 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, coeliac disease, HIV, tuberculosis and malaria. Close to 100 clinical trials based on institute discoveries are currently underway. The institute is affiliated with The University of Melbourne and The Royal Melbourne Hospital and offers postgraduate training as the Department of Medical Biology of The University of Melbourne.
