Playwrights Project is nonprofit arts education organization advancing literacy, creativity and communication by inspiring individuals to voice their stories through playwriting programs and theatre productions.
Based in San Diego, Playwrights Project reaches 10,000 individuals each year through its statewide California Young Playwrights Contest, playwriting programs in San Diego County schools, the Out of the Yard program in which teaching artists work with incarcerated individuals on playwriting, professional theatre productions and specialized play development programs serving populations such as foster youth, emerging playwrights, and seniors.
Highlights:
For the past 35 years, Playwrights Project has:
• Taught playwriting programs for thousands of students in grades 3-12;
• Produced an annual theatre festival for 33 years serving over 40,000;
• Taught playwriting to incarcerated individuals at 4 correctional facilities in the County over the last 4 years through our Out of the Yard program;
• Partnered with 87 schools each year in 28 districts in the County;
• Provided 46% of our programs to underserved populations, including English Language Learners, students with special needs, foster youth, probationary youth, and pregnant minors – improving writing and communication skills, while communicating their experiences and needs to the public; and
• Engaged over 120 working artists each year in theatre and teaching jobs.
