About
Established in 2006, the key aim of the Summer Foundation is to build better lives for young Australians living in nursing homes. Around 50 young Australians with disability enter nursing homes every week. Their lives are characterised by boredom, loneliness and grief, with 53% receiving a visit from a friend less than once per year. These are people who could live in the community if they were provided the right support at the right times. The Summer Foundation is focussing on four priority areas to achieve change in policy and practice in relation to young people in nursing homes: NDIS: Ensuring that young people with disability in nursing homes or at risk of entering one have effective NDIS plans. HOUSING: Increasing the range and scale of accessible housing and ensuring that young people with disability are finding their way into these housing options. PATHWAYS HOME: Improving the interface between the NDIS, health and aged care gateways to prevent young people being discharged from hospitals into nursing homes. COMMUNITY & PRIMARY HEALTH: Increasing access to proactive health services that sustain community living for young people with disability. Many young people with a disability have shared their stories of living in a nursing home. You can view their stories on our website: http://www.summerfoundation.org.au
