What Is United Supermarkets?
From Muleshoe up to Dalhart and on over to Pampa, United Supermarkets keeps the Texas Panhandle well fed. The grocer has about 45 supermarkets, mostly in rural towns. Its stores feature deli, floral, and bakery shops, as well as groceries, pharmacies, and gas at some locales. The company's larger format, Market Street, stocks more specialty foods. United Supermarkets runs its own distribution facility. H. D. Snell founded the firm in Sayre, Oklahoma, in 1916 as United Cash Store. He bucked the norms of the day -- when grocers sold on credit -- by selling for cash at lower prices. United Supermarkets is owned and run by the Snell family. (President Gantt Bumstead is the great-great-grandson of the founder.)
