What Is Unitarian Universalist Urban Ministry?

The mission of the Unitarian Universalist Urban Ministry is to provide services to inner-city, low-income youth and families, especially where gaps exist in the network of available services; and to provide opportunities for suburban and urban residents to work together to address racial and class divisions. The Reverend Joseph Tuckerman founded the Unitarian Universalist Urban Ministry in 1826 to empower Boston’s underprivileged citizens through education and advocacy rather than through charity. Today, the UU Urban Ministry continues to use the Rev. Tuckerman's philosophy and personal approach in helping Boston’s poor and disadvantaged develop life skills, self-esteem, education, and hope for a productive future. The Urban Ministry operates five programs that serve a range of Boston's disadvantaged residents, including children, youth, and adults.
