Thurston County, Washington is located at the southern end of Puget Sound in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. Majestic Mount Rainier and the rugged Cascade Mountains are nearby to the east, while the Pacific Coast is just an hour's drive to the west. The I-5 corridor runs through the middle of Thurston County, providing quick access to Seattle, Washington 60 miles north, and Portland, Oregon 100 miles south. Its northern border connects Thurston County with the state's largest military base, Joint Base Lewis McChord. Thurston County's 10 cities and towns are home to more than 280,500 residents. The County seat and largest city is Olympia, the state capital. This makes Thurston County a hub for the economy and politics in Washington State. Thurston County cultures range from rural farming communities in the south, to military families and dense populations in the north, to the unique culture of downtown Olympia.
