What Is The Sunflower?
The Sunflower, Wichita State University's student-run news source, has been churned out like clockwork since 1896. Currently published on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays in the fall and spring, the paper aims to cover the issues that the university community is talking about or should be aware of, in addition to the events affecting Shockers. Located for years in a sub-basement of Wilner Auditorium, one of the oldest buildings on campus, The Sunflower now resides in another basement - that of Elliott Hall, one of the newest buildings on campus and home to the Elliott School of Communication. It should be noted, however, that, aside from the housing arrangements, the newspaper has no affiliation with the School of Communication and is not produced by a class (as a "lab" paper). All Sunflower employees are paid, and nearly all are students. Reporters are in demand, as long as applicants are motivated, can "smell" news and can write well and on deadline. Other positions (photographers, designers, sales staff, commentators, copy editors) are contingent on experience.
