The story of the Jim Henson Company began in 1955 at a local television station in Washington D.C., where a young Jim Henson created and performed an inspired and anarchic five-minute nightly show called Sam and Friends. Ariring between local news and the revered Huntley/Brinkley network newscast, Sam and Friends soon attracted a broad local following which quickly spread nationwide. From these humble beginnings, The Muppets were born, expanding the boundaries of art and entertainment, giving life to a host of characters that have become as familiar as (and perhaps even more lovable than) members of our own families. Over the past 49 years, The Jim Henson Company has grown beyond the Muppets to become an internationsl leader in family entertainment, with a commitment to continuing Jim Henson's legacy and mission. The following year, the rights to the Muppet characters (along with Bear in the Big Blue House) were sold to The Walt disney Company, thus realizing Jim's longtime dream that the Muppet characters would live on forever. Today, The Jim Henson Company is a preeminent multimedia production company whose recent and current projects include Good Boy, Five Children and It, Mirrormask, the television mini-series Farscape: The Peacekeeper Wars, as well as the upcoming ABC TV movie, The Muppets Wizard of Oz.
