What Is The Crichton?

The Crichton Trust is responsible for the management of The Crichton in Dumfries in the South West of Scotland. The Crichton is set in 85 acres of beautifully landscaped grounds and gardens with 27 commercial properties. The estate has a rich heritage as a psychiatric hospital and is well known as The Crichton Royal Hospital, which began in 1834 with the construction of Crichton Hall. Easterbrook Hall was one of the last buildings to be developed on the estate in 1934. In 1995, The Crichton Trust was established to regenerate the estate and to fulfil the ever changing needs of the region, while respectfully maintaining the heritage, buildings and parkland. Today, The Crichton is home to The University of Glasgow, University of West of Scotland, The Open University and Dumfries and Galloway College, The Crichton Royal Farm and Dairy Research Centre (SRUC) and 80 public, private and third sector organisations and agencies. Easterbrook Hall is an established corporate, weddings and events venue which attracts a growing number of high profile performers, events and conferences to the region. Easterbrook Bistro, Bar & Spa, combined with the vast outdoor space and gardens, makes The Crichton a relaxing place to enjoy leisure time and is home to the weekly Crichton Parkrun. The Crichton Memorial Church sits at the heart of The Crichton and is a popular venue for weddings, concerts, graduations and services. The Crichton is inspiring place to live, work, study. learn and breathe. The Crichton Trust takes a lead role in connecting people, place and the past to shape the future and has exciting plans to launch a new Crichton Central co-working space in Criffel View. The Coronavirus pandemic presents new challenges and so the Trust is working with The Crichton Community to actively develop a post-crisis plan, while remaining focused on other key issues; the ageing society, the climate emergency and the future economy. Collaboration is key to our future success.
