Sunstone Hotel Investors buys and renovates mid-priced to luxury hotels and extended-stay lodging facilities in 17 states, primarily in the western US. The company owns more than 50 hotels, with nearly 17,000 rooms. Most of the hotels have affiliations with such franchises as Crowne Plaza, Embassy Suites, Hawthorn Suites, Hilton, Holiday Inn, Hyatt, Marriott, Radisson, and Sheraton. The firm locates underperforming or deteriorated hotels, then acquires and renovates them. Management took the company private in early 2000. Shortly thereafter it bought 10 hotels from Lodgian, including five Holiday Inns, for $132 million.
