What Is Spika Welding and Mfg?

Located in the very center of Montana, Spika Welding and Manufacturing is a surprising business to find nestled in the cattle and farm country of the Judith Basin. Company owners Tom and Carol Spika began design and manufacturing in 1999, when they established the Montana Aviary Company, a business specializing in furniture-quality aviaries for small cage birds. With the opportunity to begin designing and building specialized aluminum equipment for Precision Lift Incorporated of Monarch, Montana in 2001, the company began a change of coarse from a woodworking company to a metal fabricator and equipment developer and builder. The transition was rather natural, as Tom had an extensive history in metalworking, starting with a degree in Metals Technology from Northern Montana College in Havre, and included 10 years of employment with HCR, Inc. of Lewistown, where he served in various capacities from TIG welder to Production Manager. Spika Welding and Mfg Inc. began to grow and expand both in capability and capacity. As new products were introduced by PLI, greater production capabilities were required, and PLI began looking more and more to Spika for design, drafting, and prototyping requirements. Spika also began contracting to build products for other firms, as well as developing some products of its own, focusing on poly tank production and industrial equipment for environmental protection. One of the most valuable tools that Spika offers its customers has been the SolidWorksTM three-dimensional drafting software. This leading-edge technology has only in recent years become within the grasp of small designers and manufacturers. Spika still remains one of a few progressive Montana companies that have embraced the technology, offering unique opportunities and benefits to our clients, while allowing drafting file compatibility with much larger firms like Ford Motor Company, Kubota USA, and many large parts suppliers. Today, Spika Welding has become a premier builder of specialized equipment, both military and civilian, including wildlands fire equipment and various types of fluid transfer and discharge systems. We have become recognized as a leader in portable industrial wash and reclaim systems, helping to establish standards for noxious weed seed and aquatic invader removal. Many of our designs are gaining acceptance in the field, proving their value and effectiveness. Spika is a member of the Central Montana Chamber of Commerce, the National Association of Trailer Manufacturers (NATM), the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), the American Welding Society (AWS), and was recently elected to serve on the board of directors of the Montana Manufacturers Extension Center (MMEC). Spika Welding is a Charter member of the Central Montana Manufacturing Alliance (CMMA), a cluster group of area manufacturers that offer a vast array of capabilities, from the TIG, MIG, and Polypro welding of Spika to waterjet cutting and CNC machining of Synthesis Industries, to sheet metal forming, plasma cutting, and powdercoating of HCR Inc. Vacuum forming, casting and equipment design are also offered within the Alliance, and these various capabilities at our disposal enable us to undertake many projects we would not be able to do alone. When you as a customer deal with one of the CMMA members, you are tapping into the resources of the entire group.
