What Is SMHa?

SMHa was founded in 1990 on the heels of Hurricane Hugo’s destruction to historic Charleston and our inspiring South Carolina Lowcountry. Wanting to honor the history and landscape of the area while understanding the need to design and build in a manner that would lend not only to the region’s growth but also to its sustainability and resiliency, Sidney Stubbs, FAIA; Charles Muldrow, AIA; and Sam Herin, AIA, came together to help rebuild the Lowcountry. The core principles upon which SMHa was formed remain our pillars today: Architecture for its place, impeccable customer service, and commitment to community. SMHa has developed into an 18-person firm with 13 registered architects, allowing us the capacity to dedicate architects to each client in order to walk them through all stages of a project: From clarifying needs and desires to matching vision and budget to programming all the way through completing the punch list. Through 30 years of unprecedented growth in the region and a change in leadership in 2019 naming long-time internal architects Chris Altman, AIA; Margie Longshore, AIA; and Billy Connell, AIA, as principals, our dedication to the Lowcountry is steadfast.
