What Is Queensland Alumina?

Queensland Alumina Limited (QAL) is one of the largest alumina refineries in Australia. We commenced production in March 1967 making us Australia's first alumina refinery. We produce some 3.95 million tonnes of the world's best smelter grade alumina per year. Our refinery is located in the city of Gladstone, Queensland. Our operations include a wharf and storage facility on South Trees Island. QAL produces alumina on behalf of two aluminium companies. Rio Tinto Alcan 80% Rusal 20% We contribute approximately $200 million directly to the local economy in wages, salaries, maintenance and capital work. We use local goods and services whenever we can.
