What Is Parkville College Department of Education and Training?

He who opens a school door, closes a prison Victor Hugo. Parkville College is a specialist Victorian Government School that provides education to students who are, or have been, detained in custody within Secure Services. Essentially, we are a school operating within prisons, and other secure settings. Working in unison with the Department of Health and Human Services, we deliver education across seven sites throughout Victoria. When compared to other school settings, Parkville College has a number of unique characteristics, including the requirement to operate 52 weeks per year. Our students represent some of the most disadvantaged and vulnerable in the state, with neglect, physical trauma, psychological trauma, sexual abuse, drug and alcohol use and mental illness characterising their young lives. The Parkville College pedagogy and model follows a trauma-informed approach, as we recognise that chaotic and threatening experiences on the developing brain impair the normal organisation and function of the neural system. In turn this compromises a young person's functional capabilities. We provide all students with engaging relationships that are positive and sustaining. By stipulating predictable responses and stability and demonstrating Unconditional Positive Regard, it allows us to help each student reach their full potential. Our dedicated teaching staff assist our students towards the full development of the human personality, and assist our students in their reintegration into society. We dont expect individuals on leaving detention to have miraculously transformed, without showing them alternate ways of viewing the world. 'If you treat an individual as he is, he will remain how he is. But if you treat him as if he were what he ought to be and could be, then he will become what he ought to be and could be,' Johann Wolfgang Goethe.
