What Is Oregon Secretary of State Audits Division?
We are a division of Oregon’s Secretary of State, an independent constitutional officer elected by Oregonians. Oregon is the only state where the Secretary of State is responsible for auditing public spending. We're a learning organization and our auditors come from a variety of backgrounds: information systems management, accounting, public policy, journalism, public administration, and program evaluation. We seek to build a workforce of professionals who can leverage their skills and knowledge into recommendations that improve state agencies. We think our office has a great working environment and our work makes a difference for Oregon. The Audits Division is comprised of 69 professional auditors supported by 2 operations staff with a biennial budget of around $26 million. Mission As chief auditor of public accounts, the Secretary of State set a clear mission for the division: Protect the public interest while helping improve Oregon government. Oregon is a wonderful place to live and we work to keep it that way What we do We conduct financial, performance, and information technology audits. We also investigate allegations received on our Government Waste Hotline and monitor financial audits of municipalities. Auditors ensure public funds are spent as legally required, used to their best advantage and properly accounted for. We conduct audits in compliance with stringent professional standards, use modern analytical tools to examine millions of records, and report our results to the public. For many of our audits we choose the topic, focusing on agencies and areas needing attention. We work in teams to analyze and synthesize a broad array of quantitative and qualitative information about a state agency’s resources, workloads, and results. Our recommendations address operational, budgetary and other administrative matters. Report Government Fraud, Waste and Abuse 1-800-336-8218 or http://fraud.oregon.gov Blog: http://oregonaudits.org/
