Peak-load reduction and frequency stability are the prime challenges of electric grids, especially if the goal of substantial share of renewable energy sources (primarily solar PV) is to be realized. Nostromo Energy has developed the IceBrickTM, an Ice-based Thermal Energy Storage system (Ice-TES) that enables storage (by freezing) and discharging (by thawing) of ice in a fast and energy-efficient manner, achieving optimal volumetric water capacity, employing inexpensive components and enabling modular adjustment to the required installed capacity. It is first targeted for retrofit in commercial, chiller-based air conditioning systems.
