What Is New Zealand Symphony Orchestra?
The New Zealand Symphony Orchestra is New Zealand’s national orchestra. One of the world’s oldest national symphony orchestras, we have charmed audiences with memorable concerts and recordings since 1946. Today, the NZSO is recognised as an outstanding orchestra of international stature and our reputation for artistic excellence attracts many of the world’s leading conductors and soloists each year. Not only that, we foster the next generation of orchestral performers, through our NZSO National Youth Orchestra and education programmes, enabling emerging young artists to learn alongside acclaimed conductors, soloists and composers. We also aim to inspire a lifelong love of music through our Music for Schools programme and provide hugely popular community outreach programmes. The NZSO 2016 season offers something for everyone – celebrated composers, star appeal, bold new music, and extraordinary talent. One of the highlights will be our new music director Edo de Waart’s Masterworks series featuring lauded international soloists, including Swedish mezzo-soprano Charlotte Hellekant, renowned Mozart pianist Ronald Brautigam, captivating Scottish-Italian violinist Nicola Benedetti, German cellist Leonard Elschenbroich, former NZSO Section Principal Horn Samuel Jacobs from the United Kingdom and German-born soprano Christiane Libor. Other treats in store include the début of the eminent British conductor Sir Andrew Davis directing 128 musicians in Olivier Messiaen’s epic work Éclairs sur l’au delà, as well as a collaboration with the iconic Rodger Fox Big Band in the nationwide tour, Swing into Spring. Enjoy the excitement and drama of the NZSO’s exhilarating line-up of international stars alongside New Zealand’s elite orchestral musicians, the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra.
