What Is National Library of Scotland?

The National Library of Scotland preserves the memory of the nation with collections that span the centuries, from earliest times to the digital age. We are Scotland's largest reference library and the world's leading centre for the study of Scotland and Scots.\n\nHome to over 26 million items, over 7 million manuscripts and over 2 million maps, the National Library of Scotland is a treasure trove of information. You can register for free. Visitors can access the Reading Rooms to explore the rich collection of resources on offer, including rare historical documents, music, maps and manuscripts. The Library also has a wealth of company and market data to boost your business.\n\nLocated just off the Royal Mile on George IV Bridge, Edinburgh, the Library’s main building offers a range of facilities including free exhibitions, café and a shop. The Map Library at Causewayside, Edinburgh, is home to one of the world’s largest maps collections including town plans and railway maps. In September 2016, the Library opened a new and exciting visitor experience in Kelvin Hall, Glasgow, which includes the Library's Moving Image Archive.\n\nEach year there is a winter and summer exhibition on display at our George IV Bridge building, showcasing the Library’s collections and bringing them to life in an exciting and engaging way for visitors. All exhibitions are free and open seven days a week.\n\nWe have a wide variety of free events taking place each month, including poetry nights, talks from authors, tours with curators and a variety of workshops that are designed to help visitors get the most out of the Library’s resources. \n\nFind us on Facebook (www.facebook.com/NationalLibraryofScotland) and Twitter (www.twitter.com/natlibscot)
