What Is Metro Vancouver Transit Police?
Metro Vancouver Transit Police is the only police service in Canada that is dedicated to policing a transit system while aiding in the provision of justice and enforcement of the laws of British Columbia. Transit Police jurisdiction is the entire transportation service region, including 144 km of rail, 63 stations, over 1,500 buses, 200 bus routes, and one passenger ferry route – an area crossing twenty-one municipalities and one First Nation, served by a combination of seventeen independent police forces and RCMP detachments.\n\nAt Transit Police, the 183 sworn police officers have the same powers as any other municipal police officer within the province of British Columbia. They take a beat-style and community-focused approach to policing, but have the option to apply for a diverse range of specialized units within the department or to secondment opportunities.\n\nAt Transit Police, the 73 civilian staff support the important work of our officers. Each employee has expertise in their field and plays a vital role through positions in areas such as our dispatch centre, information management, crime analysis, or more traditional areas such as human resources or finance.\n\nTransit Police values: \n\nIntegrity\nProfessionalism\nAccountability\nRespect\nTeamwork\n \nTransit Police priorities: \n\nReducing sexual offences\nReducing frontline workplace assaults\nHelping vulnerable people in crisis\nBuilding system resiliency.
