What Is Melbourne Airport?

Melbourne Airport is Victoria's gateway to the world, connecting the local economy to the global marketplace and enabling tourism, freight and trade. The value of this vitally important asset is underpinned by our history and legacy of long-term strategic planning and development. At Melbourne Airport, our vision is to be an airport Melbourne can be proud of. We welcomed more than 34 million passengers last year, and were expecting that number to reach more than 60 million passengers per year by 2033. Melbourne Airport is one of Australia's premier transport hubs situated on an estate of 2,400 hectares. The greater Melbourne Airport precinct offers significant aeronautical infrastructure, a large business park and extensive road networks. More than 14,000 people currently work at the airport, in industries as diverse as aviation, hospitality, freight and logistics, transport and retail. Our curfew-free, 24/7 operation is vital to supporting our status as Australia's premier air freight hub, and continuing the long-term growth in the number of international visitors to Victoria. Ownership Structure Melbourne Airport is owned and operated by Australia Pacific Airports Melbourne Pty Limited (APAM), a wholly owned subsidiary of Australia Pacific Airports Corporation Limited (APAC). APAC acquired the lease for Melbourne Airport in July 1997. The airport is operated under a 50-year long-term lease from the Commonwealth Government, with an option for a further 49 years.
