What Is Medical Advocacy and Outreach (MAO)?
Medical Advocacy and Outreach (MAO), formerly Medical AIDS Outreach and Montgomery AIDS Outreach, provides much needed health and wellness services to more than 2,000 annually spanning 28 counties in addition to reaching nearly 4,500 at-risk individuals through testing and outreach initiatives. The geography benefiting from MAO services continues to grow. Three clinic hub locations, Montgomery, Dothan, and newly added Atmore, and a network of 10 satellite clinics across Central and Southern Alabama make it possible for MAO respond to client needs even in the most rural areas of southern Alabama. Services are geared to individuals infected and/or affected by potentially life-threatening illnesses, HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis C, among others, and educating those of all ages who are at risk. Available services include, but are not limited to: direct care by compassionate, skilled physical and mental health providers in a clinical setting or via Alabama e-Health*; HIV education and testing; community wellness and prevention education; food bank services; and other support services for clients. *Alabama e-Health is MAO’s system of providing services across vast distances using telemedicine technology. The system allows for remote primary care, pharmacist consultations, patient and family mental health counseling, and other medical and social services. Doctors, and/or other providers, and their patients interact through a secure video “chat†while utilizing Bluetooth medical equipment to capture real time physical data to support care assessments. As a not-for-profit charitable organization, MAO relies on a combination of earned and contributed sources to support the agency’s programs and services.
