What Is Land and Housing?

LAHC has approximately $55 billion worth of assets, with about 120,000 dwellings and was established in 2001 under the Housing Act 2001. LAHC's primary role is to provide houses for people who cannot meet their own housing needs. LAHC is reliant on income from tenanted properties and the sale of properties through existing assets and returns from future redevelopments, in order to design and deliver new housing, to meet increasing demand in the face of growing populations and changing demographics. LAHC does not manage tenancies - they provide and maintain the dwellings. The Department of Communities & Justice manages about 70% of LAHC's dwellings, with the remaining 30% managed by Community Housing Providers. As of March 2020, LAHC has 162 projects (140 active and 22 on hold) under management. The Communities Plus program is delivering a significant $22 billion program through major re-developments that will provide more and better public housing, to those in need. This includes large projects in Sydney at Waterloo, Telopea, Arncliffe, Redfern, Riverwood, Villawood and Ivanhoe. In addition LAHC is delivering these same outcomes through small-to-medium sized projects located throughout NSW, including delivering more and better housing in many regional communities. These projects involve re-developing existing Government owned land and assets by working with commercial partners to design and build modern housing that integrates with local communities and connects tenants to vital services such as health facilities, schools and transportation.
