What Is InMotion?
InMotion is a team consisting of more than 50 students of different disciplines from the Eindhoven University of Technology and Fontys University of Applied Sciences. The goal of InMotion is to solve the single problem that still keeps people from using an electric vehicle: charging times. InMotion aims to reduce charging times to roughly the same amount of time it takes to fill up a petrol car; Electric Refueling. We will showcase the potential of fast charging by competing in the Garage 56 class during the 24h of Le Mans with a fully electric endurance race car. By trying to do so, the team forces itself to develop battery technology that will push the automotive industry. The story of InMotion begins in 2009 with the Ignition, a green race car that runs on bio-ethanol. Three students from Hogeschool Utrecht decided to compete in the Formula Student competition (a race similar to Formula 1, but only for students) and built the Ignition during their minor and graduation. The Ignition represented cheap and eco-friendly racing. Then the second car was built: the Fusion. This fully electric racer is meant to break lap records, and it did just that! The Fusion is the fastest electric formula race car in the world. It has already broken three electric lap records: on Circuit Zandvoort, Circuit Zolder and TT Assen Circuit. Last August, the Revolution has been revealed. The Revolution is the first race car with our fast charging technology. Right now, charging within 12 minutes is very impressive, but we want this to be even faster. InMotion is eager to really put Electric Refueling into practice; make charging as fast and convenient as refueling. We are doing this by making our current battery pack charge even faster. This first iteration consists of a 57.6 kWh battery pack which we can charge within 12 minutes. In the course of 2021, we will further develop the battery pack to reduce the charging time to an even more impressive 7.5 minutes.
