What Is Horning Brothers?

Horning Brothers has served the Washington, DC metropolitan area with high quality residential communities and commercial properties for more than 40 years. Founded by brothers Joseph and Larry Horning in 1958, the firm first owned and managed The Chesapeake, a Connecticut Avenue landmark, while establishing the development and construction facets of their business. Early on, Horning Brothers earned a reputation for careful development and superior management of its properties. This approach has been displayed repeatedly at such apartment buildings and communities as The Saratoga, located on Connecticut Avenue, The Heights and The Cloisters, two garden communities near Capitol Hill, the award-winning Forest Apartments in Montgomery County, Maryland and The Residences at the Manor in Frederick, Maryland. Horning Brothers has built and still manages over $400 million in apartment communities and retail shopping centers. The company owns and manages over 3,000 apartment units. 2,500 units of housing provide homes to over 5,000 residents of the District of Columbia. Throughout its history, Horning Brothers has been active in the revitalization of Washington, D.C.'s neighborhoods. The Hornings are the only developers to have built housing and/or retail shopping in every ward of Washington, DC except Ward 2. They were one of the first developers to invest in rebuilding the dilapidated H St NE and 14th St. NW corridors following the 1968 riots, which erupted after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King. Horning Brothers continues its tradition of quality development in the Washington Metropolitan area. The company has completed the redevelopment of Tivoli Square and is currently working on two new large projects, Stanton Square, a 170 unit townhouse and condo community in southeast DC and Northgate Town Center, a large retail center in Frederick, Maryland.
