The history of Holden dates back to 1856 when it started as a saddlery business in South Australia. Today Holden is one of only seven fully-integrated global General Motors operations that designs, builds and sells vehicles for Australia and the world. Holden has its headquarters in Port Melbourne, Victoria, with an engine manufacturing plant on-site and vehicle manufacturing operations in Adelaide, South Australia, and is represented by more than 230 dealerships nationally. In December 2013, Holden announced it would transition to a national sales company and full-line importer in Australia and New Zealand by the end of 2017. Holden will discontinue vehicle and engine manufacturing and significantly reduce its engineering operations in Australia by the end of 2017. Holden will continue to have a significant presence in Australia beyond 2017, comprising a national sales company, a national parts distribution centre and a global design studio. Holden will leverage GM’s global portfolio to provide the best cars for the Australian market the company is committed to selling Holdens in this country for many years to come.
