What Is Hammond and Irving?

Hammond & Irving, Inc. was founded by Charles M. Hammond and Robert M. Irving in 1919. Mr. Hammond was an expert hammers man from Crucible Steel in Syracuse, NY. He knew the quality craftsmen in the industry and arranged to hire several of the more talented ones on the East Coast. Mr. Irving, owner of a mill supply business, developed a strong local customer base. Early in the 1920\'s, Hammond & Irving, Inc. decided to break from the tradition of just serving a local area\'s needs, and concentrate on rings and forgings required mainly by the Machine Tool Industry. This foresight ensured the company continued success. Growth was slow but steady even during the depression years. As the company continued to expand, larger capacity hammers were acquired to facilitate our entrance into new markets. Originally, the company\'s operation was exclusively a \"hammer shop,\" expanding from a few small steam hammers to nine hammers that covered a wide range of sizes and shapes. In the 1960\'s, the Germans developed a machine called a Ring Roller, which produced rings at a faster speed. The advantage of this Roller was that it was able to change measurements (set-up) in a matter of minutes rather than what previously took hours or even days. The company purchased a Ring Roller in the late 60\'s. Then during the 70\'s and 80\'s two hydraulic presses were acquired to replace the large hammers. In the 1990\'s Hammond & Irving continued its investment for the future. Many pieces of equipment were upgraded throughout the facility. The highlight was the commencing of a new radial axial ring roller in the spring of 1999. This new roller, a Wagner 63/63 RAW, is a world-class state-of-the art piece of equipment, which has allowed Hammond & Irving to manufacture a superior rolled ring. To continue our progress, Hammond & Irving has become registered to the IS0 9001-2000 Standard in November of 2003. We strive to be a leader in the rolled ring industry by continued investment in our people and technology.
