What Is Hamilton City Council?
Hamilton City Council is the local authority for New Zealand’s largest inland city. As a council, our purpose is to shape a world class city through smart thinking and exceptional service. We are doing this through embracing our growth, making the most of our natural assets to build a great river city and striving to be the best in business. We are the third fastest growing centre behind Auckland and Christchurch, and have a youthful population, with a lower median age than New Zealand as a whole. We have established 10 priorities for council for the next 10 years, under the umbrella of The Hamilton Plan. Broadly, these priorities focus on our economic development, on providing outstanding infrastructure to cater for population growth, strengthening our connection to the Waikato River, enhancing our green spaces, (and particularly the world-renowned Hamilton Gardens), developing a strong commercial centre to our city, celebrating our art, music and culture and providing a welcoming environment for families. At a city leadership level, Hamilton is led by effective, open and responsive governance, with a focus on transparency and sustainable financial management. Operationally , our staff are approachable, accessible, responsive to the needs of our communities and take ownership for providing the right information, first time. Our built spaces have a focus on attractiveness and quality design, with outstanding architecture and distinctive public areas, and our residents enjoy living here, valuing the natural, green environment and celebrating our key geographical feature, the Waikato River.
