Greenville Hospital System has a long history of serving the people of upstate South Carolina. Greenville’s first public hospital was established in 1912 to meet the health needs of a small but thriving city. As the area’s population and healthcare needs increased, the hospital expanded over the years and became the nation’s first health system in 1952. In those years, the health system concept of healthcare delivery was ahead of its time, and Greenville Hospital System has remained at the forefront of healthcare delivery. Today, Greenville Hospital System is one of the largest locally operated, publicly accountable health systems in the Southeast, as well as an academic teaching and research center. As a not-for-profit community health system, Greenville Hospital System is directed by a board of volunteer representatives from the communities we serve.
