Great Yarmouth Borough Council is the local district authority for the borough of Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, UK. The council serves a growing population of approximately 97,800 residents, living in Great Yarmouth, Gorleston-on-Sea and surrounding villages. It has also been England's offshore energy sector capital since 1965, with an Outer Harbour, Enterprise Zone, skilled workforce, sizeable supply chain, and prospects of sharing in significant future investment in offshore windfarms and gas platform decommissioning. Following a major public consultation about people's aspirations for the borough, the council has adopted an updated plan for the borough's future The Plan which is helping the council and potentially a range of other partners to focus their individual and collective efforts and investment to best meet public priorities. The council's six main priorities are: Economic growth Housing Neighbourhoods, communities and the environment Tourism, culture and heritage Great Yarmouth town centre Transport and infrastructure As a key priority, The Plan highlights an ambition for Great Yarmouth to be a fast-growing coastal Enterprise Town. Efforts will be focused on creating the conditions to ensure the borough and its residents are best placed to benefit from new jobs and investment, including from the next generation of offshore energy developments. The community of Great Yarmouth has been self governing since the Charter of King John in 1209. The Council - in its current form - came into existance in 1974.
