What Is Georgia Transmission Corp?

The electric cooperatives of Georgia came into being in 1936 when President Franklin D. Roosevelt initiated the Rural Electrification Act that helped to secure electric power at reasonable rates to rural areas that otherwise would have been left in the dark. The act created a federal lending agency (the Rural Electrification Administration or REA) to encourage construction of electric distribution systems in areas where power was needed. The REA then developed the means for rural Americans to set up nonprofit cooperative organizations to obtain loans and build lines and substations to supply electricity. In Georgia, these organizations were called Electric Membership Corporations or EMCs.
