What Is El Pomar Foundation?

El Pomar Foundation was established in 1937 by Spencer and Julie Penrose to enhance, encourage and promote the current and future well being of the people of Colorado through grantmaking and community stewardship. The Foundation's name "El Pomar" is old Spanish for "the orchard", derived from the Penrose home situated on an apple orchard. Based in Colorado Springs, El Pomar Foundation is one of the largest and oldest private foundations in the Rocky Mountain West, with assets totaling $550 million. El Pomar contributes $25 million annually through grants and community stewardship programs to support Colorado nonprofit organizations involved in health, human services, education, arts and humanities, and civic and community initiatives. From its inception, El Pomar Foundation has provided more than $320 million in capital, program, and general operating support through direct grantmaking. Since 1989, El Pomar has invested more than $35 million to provide innovative Community Stewardship Programs to support nonprofit organizations and individuals of all ages devoted to serving their communities now and in the future. The Association of Fundraising Professionals honored El Pomar by naming it Foundation of the Year in 1998. Part of the nomination reads ",we know of no foundation that has so enthusiastically embraced such a broad scope of creative programming in the service of the nonprofit sector."
