What Is Douglas County School System?

The Douglas County School System is a public school district of over 24,500 students in grades kindergarten through twelfth grade in 30 schools. There are currently 19 elementary schools, seven middle schools, four high schools and a Performance Learning Center program. Two new schools, an elementary and a middle school, are scheduled to open in 2009. Land has been purchased for our fifth high school with a projected opening date of 2011. With over 3,380 employees, the Douglas County School System is the county's largest employer. The school system's goal is to provide a challenging, comprehensive instructional program that will enable our students to become lifelong learners. We believe that it is important to prepare students for life after high school graduation. During their high school years, students are offered many opportunities to prepare for postsecondary education and/or future careers. Opportunities include:International Baccalaureate (IB) Program: This rigorous program offers academically able students an opportunity to earn a high school diploma and an IB Diploma. Successful completion of specified course work and examinations may enable students to earn credit or advance placement at colleges and universities around the world.
