What Is Community Media Trust?

Community Media Trust is a not-for-profit media production company that produces educational television in the fields of health, HIV/AIDS, education, gender-based violence and other topics of human rights and social development since 1998. CMT's produces all forms of media -including new media (internet and mobile media), radio, print, television and interpersonal communication – for the purpose of promoting knowledge, transparency, accountability and democracy in all areas affecting the quality of life of communities in South and Southern African states. CMT has twice been cited by UNAIDS as an example of best practice and has participated in the 2006, 2009 and 2012 National Communications Survey. We are a Level 1, 100 % BEE compliant company, and pride ourselves in training and skills development for young black media journalists and Community Health Workers. CMT’s health training is accredited with the Health and Welfare SETA and our media training is accredited with MICT SETA. In addition, CMT enjoys Section 18A Public Benefit Organisation status which allows contributions to the organisation to be tax deductible. CMT's flagship television show and brand is Siyayinqoba, a trusted health brand among poor communities in South Africa. The Siyayinqoba television series has been broadcast on SABC 1 for 8 seasons and reaches 1.2million viewers a week. The Siyayinqoba Outreach Programme recruits, trains and deploys people from communities most affected by HIV / AIDS and other health issues to provide evidence-based information on disease prevention and treatment. In 2013/14 CMT produced Amaza, a coming of age youth drama series set in Muizenberg Cape Town, for SABC 1 Monday’s at 8:30pm. CMT trained and mentored new and eager writers, directors, producers, production staff and cast through the process of creating and producing South Africa’s most watch drama series during it's run. The response to Amaza has been greater than expected reaching 7.5 million viewers.
