Civilla is a non-profit design studio dedicated to changing the way our public-serving institutions work. We walk arm-in-arm with leaders to create organizations that are more compassionate, more effective, and less expensive to operate. Our work is deeply rooted in human-centered design, an approach to problem solving that focuses on creating enduring solutions that fit peoples’ lives. By putting humans first, we help our partners deliver significant change and lasting impact in the institutions they lead. Work: We believe that the best and fastest way to scale change in society is through our public-serving institutions. Our work started in Michigan in 2015 when we partnered with state leaders to streamline the longest public benefit application in America. In a few short years, the work has already improved service for over 2.5 million people across the state. Today, we’re continuing to build a more human-centered safety net while expanding our efforts beyond health and human services. With a long term goal of impacting one billion people, we’re clear that there’s a lot more work to be done. Team: At the heart of Civilla is a dedicated team of researchers, designers, and strategists that wake up every day to take action. Our studio is a place of meaning and purpose - where people tackle work that feels bigger than themselves and where they find the ability to do that work alongside others. Recognition: Our work was recently recognized by Harvard Kennedy School as one of the Top Innovations in American Government. We received a Gold Award in Design for Society by International Design Awards (IDA) and were honored by the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts as one of the Top Organizations Moving Society Forward in 2019.
